Founded in 1995, the Sisterhood of Avalon – a non-profit organization with global membership -, is a Celtic women’s mysteries tradition. Balancing transformative inner work with academic rigor, we sponsor the Avalonian Thealogical Seminary; facilitate international training intensives; host spiritual pilgrimages to sacred sites in the British Isles and Ireland through Mythic Seeker Tours; organize two annual Celtic Women’s Spirituality events – AvaCon, our online conference in the spring, and the four-day Ninefold Festival in New England in the fall; publish devotional anthologies through Ninth Wave Press; and provide a variety of learning opportunities both through local hearth groups and our vibrant private online community.
The Avalonian Tradition, the spiritual path taught by the Sisterhood of Avalon, takes inspiration from the enclaves of holy women found throughout the Celtic world. These enclaves existed in tandem with druidism, but seemed to serve different cultural purposes. Known to us from classical historians, folk tradition, and legends, these women’s communities have similar attributes: they are closed communities of healers, shapeshifters, oracles, weather workers, and wise women in service to Divinity. The SOA focuses on the British iteration of these enclaves, known as Ynys Afallon — the Island of Avalon.
